The chart describes the factors that affect the success of learning English as a second language.

Some factors relate to the student’s first language and ability in that language. A learner’s fluency, degree of literacy and level of education also affect the capacity to learn English.

Teaching methods also influence the success of the learner. The skill and experience of the teacher are as important as the teaching strategies used by the teacher and the quality of the teaching aids and technology available.

Students of English are also affected by various personal factors. The motivation of the learners, their age, the learning conditions and the time available for study are all important influences. The student’s feelings of security about learning English are similarly significant.

A clear understanding of all these factors will obviously assist in the learning of English as a second language.
